Custom CNC milling machining nylon plastic geneva wheel gear

Custom CNC-machined nylon plastic geneva wheel gear

The Malte mechanism, also known as the Geneva wheel mechanism, is a type of mechanical transmission system commonly used to achieve intermittent motion. Its basic working principle involves a driving wheel that intermittently rotates a driven wheel with slots. Each time the driving wheel rotates, the driven wheel moves by a specific angle, thereby creating periodic intermittent motion.

The manufacturing precision of the Geneva mechanism’s intermittent transmission wheel is crucial, as it needs to meet several key requirements:

  1. Precision of intermittent transmission: Each rotational angle must be highly accurate to ensure synchronization and precision in the equipment or system.
  2. High wear resistance: Since mechanical friction leads to wear, especially in high-frequency operations, materials with high hardness and wear resistance, such as hardened alloy steel, quenched steel, and stainless steel, are commonly used.
  3. Surface finish and fit tolerance: The fit between the slots and the driving pin must be extremely precise to avoid excessive clearance or friction, which could affect the transmission performance.

Manufacturing methods:

  1. Five-axis CNC machining: This is used to machine the complex slot shapes, ensuring the positional accuracy and shape requirements of the slots.
  2. Precision grinding: In applications requiring high precision, the Geneva wheel may need to undergo grinding after machining to improve its surface finish and dimensional accuracy.
  3. Heat treatment: Steel materials are typically subjected to quenching and tempering processes to enhance their hardness and wear resistance.

This type of mechanism is commonly used in film projectors, automation equipment, and other devices requiring precisely controlled intermittent motion.
